Rose water (Persian: گلاب‎‎; golāb) is made by steeping rose petals in water. The hydrosol portion of distillate of rose petals, by-product of production of rose oil for use in perfume.



In Iran, India and other countries in the Indian Subcontinent: Gulab; refers to (Gul- Flower) and (Ab- Water) in the Persian language.



It is used in preparation of cosmetic and medicines and religious ceremonies.



Edibles:

Rose water has a very distinct taste and is used in great amounts in prepartion of Persian and Middle Eastern cuisines especially sweets such as nougat, gumdrops, and baklava. Although, it should not be confused with Rose syrup which is made from rose water and sugar.



In medieval Europe, rosewater was used to wash hands at the meal table during feasts.



Cosmetic and medicinal use



It has several beauty benefits that make it suitable for all skin types and conditions. According to Dr. Tabasum Mir, a skincare physician in cosmetic dermatology and cosmetic laser surgery, this is often found in facial sprays, toners, moisturizers, makeup removers and masks.  Rosewater has ancient homeopathic roots dating as far back as to ancient Egypt.



The anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidants and the hydrating propery makes it ideal for dermatological use.



1. It has anti-inflammatory properties which can help reducing redness from irritated or over-heated skin.

Composition:  Depending on origin and type of manufacturing method of rosewater obtained from the sepals and petals of Rosa × damascena from Central Iran through steam distillation, the following monoterpenoid and alkane components could be identified with GC-MS: mostly citronellol, nonadecane, geraniol and phenyl ethyl alcohol, and also henicosane, 9-nonadecen, eicosane, linalool, citronellyl acetate, methyleugenol, heptadecane, pentadecane, docosane, nerol, disiloxane, octadecane, and pentacosane. Usually, phenylethyl alcohol is responsible for the typical odour of rose water but not always present in rosewater products.
